Date Night

Posted on 07:14 by clark

Do you ever have one of those weeks when you only see your spouse in passing?  Matt and I kind of had one of those weeks.  He worked a lot of hours this week, and when I wasn't working, I was doing school work.  That's why after packing a picnic and a change of clothes for my husband, I sent him a text yesterday that read as follows:  Please meet me at the park after work for dinner and conversation.
We usually have a date night at the end of the week.  Sometimes our dates are a well thought out plan, and other times our dates are just a casual dinner.  Since we didn't make any plans prior to last night, I decided to throw together a last minute picnic.  It's not uncommon for us to have picnics throughout the summer.  I usually make dinner at home and take it to the park, but yesterday, the only thing I had time to do was grab Subway and a bag of chips. That's a plus to having a picnic ~ they don't usually cost a lot of money.  While picnics are super casual,  they tend to bring the feeling of solitude which makes for pleasant conversation.  And of course, an evening stroll is always a nice way to end the date before heading back home:)
Wether you have a casual picnic or a fancy dinner, I encourage you to make date night a weekly ritual in your marriage.  There's something about getting out of the house and away from the evening routine that is beneficial to marital bliss.  Remember, you don't have to spend a lot of money to spend quality time with the one you love.

A Morning With My Mom

Posted on 12:38 by clark
A few weeks ago, Matt and I had an overnight getaway for our “fakiversary” - I’ll explain exactly what that is in a later post .  Anyway, my mom came up for the weekend to housesit for us.  Since we had a few hours before Matt and I planned to leave, my mom and I spent our morning having some mother/daughter bonding time in my small town.

We started our morning at the best donut shop in Indiana – or at least that’s my opinion - Tim’s Bakery.   After tasting one bite of their warm, melt in your mouth goodness, my mom completely agreed with me.  She even thought their donuts tasted better than Long's (in Southport) and Biff's (in Mooresville).  Those are both excellent bakeries south of Indy, so that says a lot about Tim's.  If you’re ever in McCordsville, you gotta check out Tim’s Bakery, but make sure you get there early.  They often sell out by 9:00 a.m., and it's not uncommon to see the line extend outside the door.

After our not-so-healthy breakfast, we walked off our calories by walking to garage sales.  It just so happened that my neighborhood and the neighborhood down the street were having their annual community garage sale.  My mom and I both scored some good deals!  I got everything below for less than $15 :)

After a few hours of walking and shopping, I took my mom to a few local antique stores, which she LOVED!  I found a few things that I liked too, but I didn’t buy anything…..at least not yet.  Since, I like mixing both old and new things in my home, I’m certain I will be visiting my local antique stores again soon.

We had a delightful morning together, but before we knew it, it was time to get back to the house.  Overall, it was a morning well spent with my mama.  I hope we get to do it again soon :)

My Real Life Love Story Part 6 - Two Weddings Are Better Than One

Posted on 11:10 by clark

You can read previous posts abot my love story at the following links :  Introduction ;  Part 1 – How We Met ;   Part 2 – Getting To Know One Another ;   Part 3 - Engaged ; Part 4 - Planning the wedding. ; Part 5 - Saying I Do

June 26, 2009, had finally arrived.  The plans that quickly fell into place months ago were about to happen.  There was just one thing we weren't planning on....yes, one thing that wasn't in the sacred wedding notebook.  If you've been following this story, you probably know what that one thing is.  Yes, we certainly didn't think that when June 26th rolled around, we would have already been experiencing newly wed bliss for the past three months.  Yep, we were already married, and if you read part five of this story, you might have a little more insight to why we made the decision to have two weddings.
People often ask me if I regret having two weddings, to which my response is always no.  Being able to experience two weddings to the same man in such a short amount of time was really the best of both worlds ~ one was a spontaneously beautiful ceremony with just the two of us, and the other was an elegantly planned celebration with those who are closest to us.  What more could a girl ask for?
The privacy of the first wedding made it easy for us to show our love as we committed ourselves to one another and began the journey of marriage.  We were able to experience a truly intimate moment without the stress that often comes with a big wedding.  In that moment, my mind was completely focused on the man standing before me.  I wasn’t nervous, because there was nothing to nervous about.  There was no one watching my every move…..I didn’t have to worry about tripping down the aisle…..I didn’t spend the whole day getting beautified, so I didn’t have to worry about how much hairspray was in my hair or if my mascara was running down my eyes.  Do you get the point ~ it was a relaxing and enjoyable way to start the rest of our lives together.
While the first wedding was beautiful in its own way, the second wedding was equally beautiful as we renewed our vows and celebrated with family and close friends the love we shared for one another.  I don’t know of any bride that was more relaxed than I was just before they walked down the isle.  That’s partially because when I arrived at the garden, everything was done for me, but the real reason why I was so relaxed was because I was already married to the handsome man smiling back at me at the end of the aisle!
The best part about having two weddings was that I was still able to enjoy all of things that a little girls dreams of when they begin planning their wedding at the age of five!  I still had the dress and the veil, and I still walked down the aisle to the wedding march with a bouquet in my hand just like I pretended to do when I was a young girl dressing up in lacy white curtains and my mom’s high heals.
I consider myself lucky to have the wedding experiences that I had. Although, we didn’t originally plan on having two weddings, looking back on it, I wouldn’t have it any other way.  While I will admit that it is untraditional and slightly unusual, in my opinion, two weddings is definitely better than one!

Here are some of my favorite pictures from

My Real Life Love Story Part 5 - Saying I Do

Posted on 16:19 by clark

You can read previous posts abot my love story at the following links :  Introduction ;  Part 1 – How We Met ;   Part 2 – Getting To Know One Another ;   Part 3 - Engaged ; Part 4 - Planning the wedding.

The ring was on my finger, and the wedding was planned for late June.   It was set....we would be husband and wife in just a few short months.....or so we thought.  What if I told you that even though we planned and paid for a June wedding, we actually got married in March.  Uh huh.....stay with me here, because people don't really understand this part of my story.   In March of 2009, our pastor married us at our church with only our parents present, but we still had our planned wedding in late June.  Even now, people often wonder why on earth we had two weddings.  I don't expect people to understand our reasoning.   All that really matters is that it makes sense to us.  Keep reading, and maybe it will make a little more sense to you too.
From the moment Matt and I began discussing marriage, we seriously considered eloping.  The biggest problem Matt had with eloping was that we would not be sharing that special moment with our families (our parents particularly).  I also had a few concerns about eloping.  The first concern was getting married in the middle of the school year.  I tried to keep my personal life out of the classroom (this was at times difficult due the fact that most of my students went to the same church as me).  The idea of leaving on a Friday with one last name and returning on a Monday with a different last name seemed rather awkward to me.  Let's just say it was something that I really didn't want to have to deal with.  I couldn't imagine my students asking me how my weekend was, and me replying, "Oh, it was wonderful....I got married".   Are you with me....does no one else find that a little awkward?  Another concern I had with eloping was the potential thoughts that our church family and/or parents of my students would think when they found out we eloped.  Remember, my world is very conservative, and sadly I knew that it was not unlikely that some would think we "had" to get married (ie: pregnancy).  That couldn't be any farther from the truth, but the idea of people thinking it made me rethink my desire to elope.  While I had some concerns with eloping, I saw a lot of good in it.  Number one, we would save money!!!  Weddings are expensive, and even though Matt and I did all we could to keep the wedding cost down, we still ended up spending a lot of money on our wedding.  Number two, eloping would just be the two of us!!!  That was the main reason I wanted to elope.  While there is something great about sharing that special moment with friends and family, I was taken with the idea of making the moment that we committed ourselves to one another a private and intimate moment.   I really didn't want to worry about how my dress looked or how many people were watching us say "I do".  I just wanted that moment to be about us and not a big wedding going on around us.  Regardless of what we thought about eloping, we obviously put the idea in the back of our minds, because we planned on a beautiful garden wedding for the upcoming summer.
The idea of eloping didn't really come up again until late February.  It was around that time that we were figuring out the details of our upcoming living situation once we were husband and wife.  Naturally, I would move into his house, since he was a home owner and I was a renter.  When I went to talk to my landlord about moving out, I was presented with three possibilities.  Number one, I could break my lease in June and pay $1,500.  Number two, I could pay my monthly rent until my lease was up in September even though I was moving out in June.  This didn't sound like a good idea, since my rent was $700 a month, and I had utilities.  The third option was to let a potential renter have my apartment, but there were circumstances that had to occur in order for us to take that option: there couldn't be any other apartments available at the time someone wanted my apartment, and the renter had to be ready to move into the apartment right away.  The third option sounded great, because we wouldn't have to pay $1,500 to get out the apartment.  However, we planned on the first option, because what were the odds of someone wanting my apartment right when I was needing to get out?
Well, things got even more complicated on a late February day when I was told that someone did want my apartment......but they needed to move in April, 1.  What were we to do with that information?  We needed to make a decision quick.  On the one hand, we had already planned and paid for a June wedding......we couldn't just cancel it, and moving up the wedding date wasn't and option.  On the other hand, we could save $1,500 if I was out of my apartment by April 1....not to mention, we would save four months rent and utilities.  We began to think that there might be a happy medium to our predicament.   What if we had a small intimate ceremony at our church with our parents before April 1, and we renewed our vows at the planned ceremony in June!  In other words, we would have two weddings!  One would be private and intimate (just the way I wanted it), and the other would be a celebration with friends and family (just the way Matt wanted it).  This idea was sounding more appealing each time we discussed it, and not just because it got us out of our predicament,  but because there was something romantic and exciting about the whole idea.
We went to our pastor with our news, and he agreed to marry us on March 20, as long as we completed all of our marriage counseling.  That only gave us one month to make some big adjustments to our wedding plans!  Even though we wanted our parents at the March wedding, we didn't want to tell anyone else about the new wedding plans (with the exception of close family) until we were actually wed.  After all, if our parents didn't quite understand the idea of two weddings, we knew that others wouldn't understand either, and we didn't want to be talked out of our plans.  Plus, there was just something exciting about keeping it to ourselves!
When the wedding day arrived I was a calm and collective bride.  I went to work like any other Friday, but when I got home I slipped on a white evening gown and prepared myself for my groom.   On March 20, 2009, at 6:00 pm, Matt and I met at our church for a short private wedding ceremony before God, our pastor and our parents.  It was a beautiful spontaneous way to commit our lives to one another.   There was something beautiful and intimate about that moment, and I don't think it would have been the same if there were one hundred people watching us.
Even though most of our families knew we had just gotten married, I was still hesitant to tell my students and church family the news for reasons previously listed.  It didn't really matter though, because one of my former students was in the church building the night we got married.  By the time I arrived to work on Monday, everyone already knew my big news ;)

Bitter-Sweet Shopping Deals

Posted on 13:20 by clark

A few weeks ago, I heard some bitter-sweet news about one of my favorite stores on the South side of Indy.  If you live around Indy, and you haven't heard, then prepare yourself...... the Greenwood Flower Factory is closing!  Like many shoppers, I had mixed feelings about this recent bit of information.  On the one hand, I was immediatly bummed, because I really love the combination of variety and low prices that Flower Factory offers.  On the other hand, I was excited, because I knew everything in the store was going on SALE!  Seeing as how I'm not the kind of girl to pass up a good sale, I immediately made plans to take a thirty minute drive and take advantage of the good deals.  I'll have you know, I was not disappointed.   Now, I will tell you that I made my bitter-sweet shopping trip a few weeks ago, so while I don't know what kind of merchandise is left, I'm certain that everything left is at a reduced price.  If you live in the Indianapolis area, and you haven't already done so, go check out Flower Factory's store closing sale.

For those of you who don't know what Flower Factory is, it's a store that primarily sells items for the home, but they tend to have a variety of things.  I've mentioned Flower Factory in my blog before, when I wrote a post about my South Side Shopping Day.

here's what I got at the big sale......

seasonal rugs for the front door - $6 each

wall decor for the master bedroom - $6 for the large one, $4 each for the small ones

several gift bags - all were less than $1, many were around $.50

2 candles for the front porch - $2.50 each

10 glass votives - $.50 each
2 packs of tealights - $1 per pack

My Real Life Love Story Part 4 - Planning the Wedding

Posted on 19:14 by clark

You can read previous posts abot my love story at the following links :  Introduction ;  Part 1 – How We Met ;   Part 2 – Getting To Know One Another ;   Part 3 - Engaged

It’s been a while since I wrote about my real life love story.  Today, I continue with a post about how Matt and I planned a wedding in only three weeks. That's right, within three weeks we researched, contacted and confirmed every aspect of our special day.   Below are some of the decisions we made about our wedding and a few tips for planning a wedding.  I also put in contact information for the vendors that we chose to use for our wedding.

The Wedding Notebook
Organization is key to planning a wedding!  Here’s a tip for all brides ~ keep a detailed notebook of your plans!  This little binder had every detail of our wedding in it!

The Budget
Along with the organized notebook, Matt and I had a detailed spreadsheet that kept track of every penny we spent on the wedding.  That was important to us, since we paid for the wedding ourselves.

A Small Family Wedding
Other than eloping, a simple church wedding would have been the most cost-effective way for us to get married…..but I really did not want a church wedding for the following reason ~  we felt like it would be a very public ceremony if we had the wedding at our church......which meant inviting just about everyone we knew.......making it impossible for us to stay within our budget….unless I, and I stress the word I, did a lot of the work myself to stay within the budget ~ therefore, we opted for a small family wedding at an outdoor venue that would set the stage for a casual but classy wedding.

A Timeframe
Once we knew what kind of wedding we wanted, we needed to confirm a timeframe for the wedding.   We chose the summer of 2009 for two reasons: it would be a short engagement, and it would not interupt my school year.

The Guest List
I confess...I tend to be a control freak.  People that know me would assume that I would spend hours on the details of my wedding (ie: making the invitations, the flowers, the cake, the food, decorations, ect.), rather than letting someone else help me with the details.  When Matt and I got married, my life was way too busy and chaotic to stress out about any wedding details.  By keeping the guest list to one hundred people (family only with the exception of a few close friends), our budget allowed us to pay other people to take care of the details for us, which made me a relaxed and happy bride:)

The Venue for the Ceremony
After looking at several venues and comparing prices, we decided to have our wedding at Avon Gardens. The best way I can describe this venue is GORGEOUS!

The Venue for the Reception
Fortunately, Avon Gardens was able to facilitate our reception just steps away from the ceremony.

The Date and Time
Setting a wedding date really depended on the venue.  We chose Friday, June 26, 2009, at 6:30 p.m., because it was the only Friday evening Avon Gardens was not booked for the summer wedding season.

The Invitations
We ordered our invitations online from Wedding Paper Divas.  They have a lot of invitation styles to choose from.

The Officiant
Once we had an official wedding date, we went to our pastor to see if he was available to marry us.

The Attendants
A small wedding meant a small wedding party.  I asked my mom to stand by me as my matron of honor, and Matt had a best friend from college who was his best man.

The Registry
We registered at Target and Bed Bath and Beyond.

The Cake and Caterer

The Cake and The Caterer by Nick and Lisa Farkas out of Bloomington, Indiana, provided us with dinner and cake at a reasonable cost, but the company no longer exist.  They've moved onto bigger and  better things, but let me just say that they were affordable compared to other catering companies ~ and the food was delicious!  Since the website no longer exist, I'll give you some quick info about the catering.  They offered several menu choices, but we selected the following:
Italian style meatballs; bruschetta, spinach artichoke dip and seafood dip with crostini; fresh ceasar salad; penne pasta in cream sauce with prosciutto and asparagus; garlic roasted chicken in pesto cream sauce and sun dried tomatoes; roasted balsamic glazed grean beans; roasted red potatoes with fresh herbs; three layer cake (chocolate, vanilla, pina colada rum).
We paid for 100 guest at $16 a head (buffet style).  The cake was $3 a slice, but our cake fed over 300 people (350 slices).  And we were also able to to rent standard china, glass and silverware setting for $2.10 a person (that's much cheaper than many rental companies).  An additional 15% gratuity was added and a 6% sales tax was added aswell.
To some this may sound expensive, but we did a lot of research and were very pleased with the quality of food and service combined with a decent price.

The Florist
Post Road English Gardens did a beautiful job on our bouquets, boutonnieres and flowers for the cake.

The Photographer
Photography is something that I don’t recommend skimping on for a wedding.  Unlike the cake and flowers, the pictures last forever, so try to hire a professional to take your pictures.  Let’s get real though…..wedding photographers are EXPENSIVE!  I was ecstatic when I found Running Creek Studio on the internet….and I was even more ecstatic when I made an appointment to see Julie's portfolio.  At the time of our wedding, she was a young mom who was starting her own photography business.  She was very affordable compared to other wedding photographers in our area, and she did a beautiful job!

The Music
I really wanted a harpist at our wedding, and I found Elizabeth O'Meara Ahlgrimon at indyharpist.com.  Matt and I were very impressed when we made an appointment to hear her music.

The DJ and Dance Floor
Ok, so Matt and I don't really dance....and we knew most of our guest didn't dance.....therefore, we saved a little money and just had dinner and mingling during our reception.  However, our venue was able to accomodate a dance floor if we needed one.

Decorations and Rentals
Tables, chairs, tents, linens and place settings can be very expensive to rent.  Fortunately, Avon Gardens gave us the option of renting all of our wedding necessities through them.  It was more cost-effective to rent from them, and they did all of the work for us ~ including decorating for the ceremony and for the reception.  When I showed up for my pictures, everything was done for me!

The Dress
We purchased my wedding gown and vail from David's Bridal, but it is no longer available.  It was the second dress I tried on, and I just knew it was meant for me:)   We also purchased my mom's gown from David's Bridal.

The Tux
We rented tuxedos for the groom, best man and father of the bride at Men's Wearhouse and Tux.

The  Rings
Since Matt purchased my engagement ring at Jared, we purchased our wedding bands there too.

The Details
We ordered most of the details of our wedding from http://www.theweddingoutlet.com/

Hair
I am so glad I planned on an updo, because it was a hot and humid 98 degrees on our wedding day.  Naturally, I went to my hair dresser at D:fine Salon the morning of my wedding, but it was important that I had a picture of what I wanted my hair to look like.  Eva Longoria's hair in this picture was my inspiration.

Mani and Pedi
Since we got married in a garden, I went barefoot on my wedding day.  My mom and I got a mani and pedi at a local nail salon the day before the wedding.

The Honeymoon
The honeymoon could be its own post.  I'll just say that within the three week time frame we planned our wedding, our plans for the honeymoon were also finalized.  We took a long honeymoon that began the day after the wedding with a road trip to Niagara Falls.  We then drove to NYC where we set sail on a nine day Caribbean cruise to Burmuda, Puerto Rica, the Virgin Islands and Turks and Caicos.  When we returned to the states, we had a couple of days to sightsee the "big apple" before driving home.

So how did we do all of this in three weeks?  Well, I stayed up late each night researching and planning.  Then, I gave Matt everyone's contact information, so he could schedule all of our appointments.  He tried to make all appointments during the few hours a week that I was available to go to appointments, but there were times when he went to the appointments by himself.  At the end of three weeks, everything was planned and most of it was paid for.  It's ironic that after all of our planning for a traditional wedding, things didn't end up as traditional as we planned......but I'll have to tell that story on another day......
